Counselling provides a unique relationship in that a counsellor is someone who comes with no expectations of how you ought to think or act, and is there for you as trained support with no personal agenda.
Counselling works in a different way for everyone but ideally the relationship becomes a place for you to feel safe enough to work through problems and thoughts with someone trained who sees things from your perspective without distraction. This place can also be one where you choose to 'practice' how you might want to change things about yourself or your relationships if that's what you want to do.
